History
Conkwright Middle School, named after
Superintendent William G. Conkwright, opened in 1968. It began
as a junior high school, and later converted to a middle school with
the closure of Belmont Junior High and the construction of a new
middle school. Conkwright Middle is located in a small
community adjacent to a large metropolitan city. Clark County
has a mixture of rural, suburban, and metropolitan areas. The
student population is a mixture of all three areas. A magnet
school for gifted and accelerated learners was established in 1995.
With this addition, the student population became uniquely diverse.
The students on the magnet team have the same teachers all three
years of middle school. As a result of the effectiveness of
this teaming, all students at Conkwright now are involved in
"looping." The school has a structured school-wide discipline
plan that includes a standardized dress code. The faculty and
staff strive to accomplish their vision of helping students reach
the highest level of academic performance, creativity, and social
development. This is realized through the school's mission of
excellence as a matter of pride and tradition. |
